Our Family Made the News in Jamaica

"Family of dentists serves hundreds."

That was the headline in the local newspaper and online, “The Gleaner,” in August 2026, with a photo of Dr Adam, Dr Joanne, and our older son Justin volunteering together in Jamaica on a dental mission.

This past summer, following our volunteer experience in Grenada last year, the three of us once again joined the Great Shape! 1000 Smiles project, this time in Jamaica— providing free dental care to those in need.

KINDNESS IN ACTION

Justin is now in his 4th and final year of dental school at U of T. Seeing him put his knowledge, his skills and his heart into the care of people is what fills us with such pride. It's kindness, it's compassion, it's skill in action and it's giving people a reason to smile: that's our life's mission.

As parents, there is a special JOY in seeing the values you have lived as a family become part of the way your child cares for others. And in Jamaica, we had the privilege of experiencing that joy together.

We welcomed patients with a smile, compassion, and a genuine desire to help. Before any treatment began, we already had a chance to connect—to let someone feel they mattered to us and that we cared.

The smiles and laughter that came back touched us deeply. There is a warmth in someone’s gratitude that words cannot fully express. You feel their joy. It’s contagious. You share it. And you carry it forward.

We felt the meaning of those words every day: in the welcome we offered, in the gratitude we received, and in the smiles we were there to protect and restore. To have the knowledge and skills to help another person in this way is an extraordinary privilege.

Sharing that privilege with our son made it one of the most precious experiences of our lives.

Jamaica has held a special place in our hearts for more than 25 years. That’s where our honeymoon was in 2000, and we have spent many happy vacations there, drawn back by the warmth of its people, exemplified by the spirit of “One Love” that Bob Marley shared with the world. Being able to offer our skills to people on the island that has given our family so many great memories felt deeply meaningful.

To us, “One Love” expresses our shared humanity. We experienced it through the kindness, compassion, trust, and gratitude that brought patients and volunteers together. We came to help, and we left with our own hearts full.
